Beyond Content & Competencies:
a Management Model

Consistent with my philosophy of putting the ME in MEdia Literacy, I approach staff development and curriculum development from YOUR perspective.

That may mean a single school, a school district, state standards or national standards & guidelines.

None of my workshops or presentations are based on a 1 size fits all model.

Utilizing time-tested models for the successful infusion of innovations in educational institutions, my approach seeks to connect perceived innovations e.g Media Literacy, to the mission statements of the host organization, whether it’s a single school, or a school district, a state, or national organization.

That approach may be content centered for example connecting Media Literacy to national ELA standards described in NCTE guidelines, or it may be client centered, for example connecting Media Literacy to the nature and needs of early adolescents as it is described by the National Middle School Association.

This client-centered approach develops strategies to integrate media literacy into the prevailing philosophy and practice of the host, in this case middle schools.

It also includes relevant and developmentally appropriate teaching strategies. This is particularly crucial when working with adolescents who can become very territorial and protective of teen turf and pop culture when confronted with adults, however well –meaning who condemn or dismiss their culture. Engage them, don’t enrage them!
